The Game of All Games

Online Maps

The classic version is severely limited to only the map that comes with the game. Online versions of Risk have the advantage of custom maps. In most cases, you can even make your own maps and upload them for other people to use. Here is a summary of the most popular maps.

Classic Original

The original map includes the continents of North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. It is the most widely played map, both online and off. Some say it isn't perfectly strategically balanced because some areas are extremely difficult to control and other are very easy. However, with more than a million games played on this map during the last year alone, it still ranks as one of the best of all time.

Geographic Specialties

When you're ready to develop your online risk skills further by venturing beyond the classic original, try some geographic specialties like the Artic Ocean map. It's uses a view of Earth from the North Pole. Each continent is a surrounding shoreline of the Artic Ocean. Even the North Pole itself is worth 1 bonus army.

Abstract Maps

A new trend in the online version is to play on maps that have nothing to do with geography at all. Instead of traditional country borders, they use abtract concepts. Each concept can be linked using lines, arrows, or other artistic connectors.
